Air Canada halts service to India as Pakistan closes airspace

Canada’s largest air carrier Air Canada has grounded flights to India as tensions rise between the country and Pakistan.

The temporary halt was issued Wednesday as Pakistan closes the airspace, leaving a flight from Toronto to be directed to return, while another flight from Vancouver was cancelled.

“One flight en route to Delhi today has turned back over the Atlantic Ocean and is returning to Toronto, while a second flight from Vancouver to Delhi today has been cancelled,” said Isabelle Arthur, media relations director. “We have put in place a goodwill policy for affected customers and are monitoring the situation in order to resume service once the situation normalizes and we determine it is safe to do so.”

A Toronto-Mumbai flight is still scheduled for tonight, as Air Canada has modified its route.

The Canadian government has issued an advisory, warning travellers to exercise “a high degree of caution in India due to a continuing threat of terrorist attacks throughout the country at all times.”
