Canadians can enter Brazil visa-free starting June 17

Brazil is loosening up visa regulations for some countries this year.

Canadian, along with American, Japanese, and Australian citizens looking to travel to Brazil will be able to enter visa-free starting June 17, according to the announcement by Brazilian government officials Monday.

Right now, e-visas are needed for visitors, but as of June, “citizens of those countries wishing to visit Brazil will no longer need to apply or pay for a visa,” Brazilian Tourism said.

“They will be able to stay in Brazil for 90 days from the date of first entry in the country, extendable for an equal period, provided that it does not exceed 180 days, every 12 months, counted from the date of the first entry into the country.”

This comes as the country tries to increase tourism to Brazil, following much success with the implementation of e-visas last year.

Brazil’s Foreign Ministry said in 2017, 169,910 visas were issued to citizens of Canada, U.S, Australia, and Japan, and they’re looking to keep the upward trend going.

“This is one of the most important achievements of the Brazilian tourism industry in the last 15 years and we are confident that it will be extremely beneficial to the country,” Marcelo Alvaro Antônio, Minister of Tourism said.

“This decision of the Brazilian government proves that we are living a new moment and that tourism is being seen as a vector of economic and social growth of the entire nation. This is the first step; we still have much to celebrate.”
