It was a move some analysts saw coming, and it become official Thursday.
Icelandic budget carrier WOW Air has officially ceased all operations, cancelling all flights effectively immediately.
This follows months of financial turmoil and failed deals, including a deal from Icelandair Group to acquire the low-cost airline last November that fell apart in weeks.
WOW issued a press release from the Icelandic Transport Authority advising passengers to rebook flights with other carriers, and that they may be entitled to compensation.
“Passengers may also be entitled to compensation from Wow Air, including in accordance with European regulation on Air Passenger Rights. In case of a bankruptcy, claims should be filed to the administrator/liquidator.”
The airline operated on low seat costs but charging extra for seat selection, baggage, space, and were marketing the Iceland stopover as a big benefit. Additionally, WOW had faced criticism for lack of customer service and accountability for delays.
With flights from cities like New York, Toronto, Washington, Iceland, and many cities in Europe, stranded customers are now left having to navigate alternatives while being directed to a page WOW has set up on their website.
