Maid of the Mist in Niagara Falls becomes electric and zero-emissions

If you’re headed to Niagara Falls later this year, you’ll notice the Maid of the Mist vessels are getting a bit of eco-friendly love.

Two new electric and zero-emissions passengers vessels are being constructed to replace Maid of the Mist VI and VII, made in 1990 and 1997, respectively.

The boats are catamaran in style, designed to facilitate over a million visitors every year to get up close and personal with Niagara Falls.

“The Maid of the Mist has offered tours of the world-famous Niagara Falls waterfalls and of the Niagara River Gorge for more than a century, and are a signature tourism attraction of Western New York,” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said. “The new zero-emission boats will continue that proud tradition while continuing our efforts to make New York State a premier environmentally friendly tourism destination.”

The Maid of the Mist has been around since 1846, and the modern touch is expected to keep the tourist attraction going for decades to come.
