It’s a move made in the name of security, but some are calling it a privacy concern.
Toronto Pearson International Airport and its operator, the GTAA, have announced that they’re deploying a technology in the spring that aims to help security personnel detect potential weapons on passengers travelling through its terminals.
The technology, Hexwave, will integrate machine learning as well as 3D imaging to detect weapons within a crowd and without impacting checkpoint wait times. Weapons include guns, knives, and explosives.
This technology is also being tested in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and the Rogers Arena in Vancouver.
The GTAA’s security administration says the technology “will be deployed just outside airport terminals in order to pick up on potential threats before they get inside,” and that Hexwave will work in addition to existing security protocols.
