Air Canada pilot ordered 23 pizzas to stranded passengers

Time for a travel story that restores some faith in humanity.

An Air Canada pilot is being praised by passengers after he went above and beyond when diverted flight 608 was stuck on the tarmac in Fredricton for hours—then, proceeded to order 23 pizzas for stranded passengers and crew.

The Halifax-bound flight from Toronto wasn’t able to land due to weather Monday afternoon, when it was redirected to New Brunswick. At Halifax-Stanfield International Airport, flights were temporarily redirected after a plane skidded off the runway, prompting a temporary shutdown.

Other aircrafts occupied the gates at Fredricton, forcing the Airbus A320 to sit on the tarmac for almost eight hours.

With no other food on the plane, the pilots made a call to the local Minglers Restaurant and Pub, where fresh pies were sent to the airport and directly to the plane.

When the pub received the order, only three cooks were in the kitchen, but were able to send 23 pizzas to the grateful passengers and crew.

CBC News spoke with passengers on the flight, saying they were relieved to be regularly updated and the pizza was a great gesture.

“It was something that could have been very stressful; he made it a lot easier,” passenger Philomena Hughes said to CBC. “It makes such a difference when you know what’s going on… They looked like they appreciated the pizza.”

Earlier this year, Canadian air traffic controllers sent pizza to their American colleagues in wake of the U.S. government shutdown.
