Having cruised some of the latest ships including Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas and Norwegian Cruise Line’s Escape, there’s no doubt the cruising industry has made many changes.
Aside from the ships growing in size, here are 10 ways cruises have evolved in 2019.
Reduced motion sickness
With the ships getting bigger, yes, you feel much less motion. So, if you’re prone to seasickness, you could give a larger ship a try. Royal Caribbean’s Oasis class of ships are great!
More value
With increased competition, cruise lines have found ways to pass on even more value to passengers, from free internet to drink packages. Take advantage of deals!
Faster internet
Speaking of free internet, many cruise lines are now offering unlimited interested at lowering costs. Huzzah, technology!
Simplified process
Boarding cruises are easier than ever before. On my recent cruise, we checked in on a tablet to verify documents, boarding passes were printed at home, and our room keys were waiting at our suite door.
Family friendly
Cruise lines know parents need a break—and tech has come a long way. From VR arcades to go carts, ships are moving beyond rock-climbing walls and zip lines!
Increased variety
As ships get larger, the variety grows, too. From niche experiences like moving bars to wave riders, you will never be bored.h
Diverse food
It’s one of my favourite aspects of cruising—the food! From Japanese teppanyaki to Brazilian grill, healthy salad bars to Mexican, be amazed by the variety of cuisines from around the globe onboard a floating city.
Easier than ever before
Cruise lines from Princess to Royal through NCL all offer apps where you can navigate jam-packed activities and entertainment, find maps, make reservations, and stay in touch with your friends and family.
Social
Cruise directors will set up meetups for individuals from your country, or help facilitate meeting friends if you’re a solo traveller. If you’re gay, you can also attend a Friends of Dorothy meetup to meet other same-sex couples or gay singles.
A cruise for everyone
A quick Google search will reveal the many niche cruises on the market. From Atlantis and Olivia cruises for gay men and women, through heavy metal meetups, conferences, and everything in between, you can join a community to see the world together!

We took our 3 and 6 year olds went on our first cruise last spring and it was amazing. Non stop fun, food everywhere and so many adventures. We are going on a ‘Mega Ship’ on our next adventure and can’t wait. A cruise truly let you pick your own adventure at any time. It is amazing how simplified the check in process is. By doing so much in advance when arriving at the port its a breeze.
