Pilots must learn MAX 8 in a simulator before flying over Canada: Transport minister

Canada’s transport minister says any pilots who want to fly over Canada with the Boeing 737 MAX 8 must first train inside a flight simulator.

Simulation training was not a requirement for many airlines operating the aircraft, but after the deadly crash of an Ethiopian Airlines flight in March, Marc Garneau is underlining the importance of the simulators.

Garneau referenced pilots who took a one-hour online training program to upgrade their Boeing 737-800 certification to include the MAX 8 variant, saying it require more training than an hour on an iPad.

Boeing continues to work on software updates to roll out to airlines, while investigations continue for the Ethiopian Airline and Lion Air crashes that took the lives of 346 people.
