Toddler dies falling from Royal Caribbean ship docked in Puerto Rico

An 18-month-old girl slipped from her grandfather’s hands and fell 11 decks to her death in Puerto Rico, according to local port authority.

The toddler, from the U.S., was playing with her grandfather on the 11th deck of Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas when he lost grip of the girl and dropped her, falling 11 stories to her death, according to police reports via The Associated Press.

The girl died on impact and the cruise line called the incident tragic, offering to help the family in whatever way they can.

The father of the girl is a police officer in South Bend, Indiana, and the department has tweeted its “sincerest condolences.”

Local police are investigating the incident.
