Aeroplan implements new COVID-19 cancellation policy, pause to expiration of points

Air Canada’s loyalty program, Aeroplan, implemented new updates Friday that looks to give travellers added flexibility for existing reward travel as well as access the points in light of the novel coronavirus.

Cancellations to flight rewards

As part of these changes, you can cancel any flight reward free of charge until April 30, 2020. All of your miles will be returned to your account, plus a refund of applicable taxes, fees, and surcharges on unused value of travel. Air Canada says that as call volumes are high, the easiest way to cancel flight rewards is through their website at Aeroplan.com.

Temporary pause to points expiration

Typically, Aeroplan Miles are safe as long as you keep your account active within 12 months of last account activity unless you have a participating Aeroplan credit card. Air Canada is relaxing the policy putting a temporary pause on points expiration through May 14, 2020. The airline says the regular policy will resume May 15.

For Air Canada Altitude status members

Air Canada has automatically deposited additional eUpgrade credits into your account in the amount of 10, 15, 20, and 25 credits for Prestige 25K, Elite 35K/50K, Elite 75K, and Super Elite 100K members respectively.

The credits are available for use immediately, and is in recognition of COVID-19’s impact on travel. These credits extend beyond the regular end-of-February expiry date and are valid until May 31, 2021.
