How to spot a hidden camera in your hotel room

Yesterday, Master Travellr reported about a concerning police alert that thousands were secretly filmed and live-streamed in dozens of hotels in South Korea. Two men have been arrested after allegedly mounting these cameras in over 30 hotels in 10 cities across the country.

“There was a similar case in the past where illegal cameras were installed in (hotels) and were consistently and secretly watched,” police said to CNN. “This is the first time the police caught where videos were broadcast live on the Internet.”

With the rise in concern, here are a few tips to scan the room for possible hidden cameras:

  • Wires in unexpected places or wires that don’t seem to go anywhere While many cameras are wireless, unexplained wiring could lead to a hidden camera.
  • Lights A camera designed to be stealthy won’t have any obvious signs like this, but cameras not designed to be hidden often do, and if the person who placed the camera wasn’t careful, this can be an obvious giveaway.
  • Small holes in walls or other places It only takes a pinhole for a camera lens to see into a room. Some types of hidden cameras take advantage of this by hiding in innocuous objects with a small hole for the camera.
  • Objects out of the ordinary If you’re in a familiar place, look for anything that’s new or has been moved.

Alternatively, you can purchase a hidden camera detector online for less than $20.

Just a few tips so you don’t fall victim to a hidden camera operation.
