Sri Lanka to grant free visa on arrival to 30+ nationalities

In a move to encourage tourism, Sri Lanka is trialing a free visa program that’ll make it easier for prospective visitors to enter on arrival.

Visas typically cost $20 to $40, but will soon be free for visitors in over 30 countries, including Canada, UK, the EU, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand.

Free visas can be obtained at Bandaranaike International Airport as of May 1, according to Lonely Planet. They will be trialled for six months, and if successful, the government will look at extending the offer permanently.

Sri Lanka has seen an uptick in tourism in the past years. Our own Nicole Revert recently explored the nation and its offerings. Check out her full review and travel guide here.
